Bedroom pillows are something we use every single night and come to rely on to give us a good night’s sleep.
But our pillows and duvets are often forgotten about, sometimes being left for months or even years without being washed, let alone replaced.
If you’re one of those people, a doctor has now released a video explaining why you should be buying new pillows every two years – and it might be enough to change your mind.
Dr Karan Raj has racked up millions of views on TikTok sharing everything from medical advice and facts, to sleep methods, to behind-the-scenes looks as life as a doctor.
In a video captioned: ‘You need to change your pillows at least every two years’, he explains: “The average person sheds about 4kg of skin every year. Most of that ends up on your bed or pillow – a feast for microscopic dust mites.
“A single dust mite has about 20 droppings each day, multiple that by the hundreds of mites living on your pillow.
“A build up of dust mite faeces can cause breathing and allergy-type symptoms.”
He continued by warning that if you spot yellow and brown patches on your pillow while changing your sheets, it’s a result of sweat and oil from your body building up over months or years of use – and that moisture can breed mould or bacteria.
Dr Raj advised to fold your pillow in half and see if it springs back open. If it doesn’t, it’s time to get a new one as it’s no longer keeping you supported and can damage your posture.
The advice racked up more than 1.2 million views and thousands of comments, as one said: “I wish I didn’t see this video.”
A second wrote: “My pillow is older than me.”
And another added: “Oh that’s why it’s hard to breathe.”
